Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear in the legs due to weakened vein valves and poor circulation. While some people notice them only as a cosmetic concern, others experience aching, swelling, heaviness, or burning in their legs. At BASS Vein Center, our board-certified vein specialists diagnose and treat varicose veins using the most advanced, minimally invasive procedures available in the East Bay and North Bay.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when the valves inside leg veins stop working properly. These valves normally keep blood flowing upward toward the heart. When they weaken, blood flows backward and pools inside the vein, causing it to enlarge, bulge, and twist.

Common symptoms include:

  • Visible bulging veins
  • Leg heaviness or fatigue
  • Aching or throbbing pain
  • Swelling (especially around the ankles)
  • Itching or skin irritation
  • Night cramps
  • Discoloration around the ankle (advanced cases)

Left untreated, varicose veins can progress into chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), leg ulcers, or blood clots.

Who Is at Higher Risk for Varicose Veins?

Several factors increase the likelihood of developing varicose veins:

Age

Vein valves naturally weaken over time, making varicose veins more common after age 40–50.

Family History

If a parent or sibling has varicose veins, your risk increases significantly.

Pregnancy

Increased blood volume and hormonal changes can lead to enlarged veins in the legs.

Prolonged Sitting or Standing

Jobs that require long periods of sitting or standing add pressure to leg veins.

Weight

Excess weight increases strain on the venous system.

Hormonal Factors

Puberty, pregnancy, and menopause contribute to valve weakening.

Gender

Women develop varicose veins more frequently than men.

Varicose Vein Treatment Options

Your recommended treatment depends on the severity of your vein disease, symptoms, and overall vein health. Our specialists perform the full spectrum of minimally invasive procedures.

Sclerotherapy

Best for: small to medium varicose veins and spider veins

A medication (liquid or foam sclerosant) is injected into the vein to seal it closed. The vein collapses and fades as the body reabsorbs it.

  • Performed in-office
  • No anesthesia required
  • Minimal downtime

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

Best for: varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency

A laser fiber is inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance. Heat seals the vein shut so blood flows into healthier veins.

  • Minimally invasive
  • Fast recovery
  • No general anesthesia

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Best for: large or symptomatic varicose veins

A catheter delivers radiofrequency heat to close the diseased vein.

  • Very effective
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Quick return to normal activities

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Best for: large bulging veins near the skin surface

The vein is removed through tiny skin punctures.

  • Local anesthetic only
  • Immediate cosmetic improvement
  • Minimal scarring

Catheter-Based Closure Procedures

Includes laser, radiofrequency, or glue-based closure (such as VenaSeal).
These are preferred for large, deeper veins causing significant symptoms.

High Ligation & Vein Stripping

Rarely used today but still options for complex cases.

Endoscopic Vein Surgery

Used for: advanced venous disease, venous ulcers, or failed previous treatments

A tiny camera helps the surgeon close and remove damaged veins.

When Should You Treat Varicose Veins?

You should seek evaluation if you experience:

  • Increasing pain or swelling
  • Heaviness or fatigue after standing
  • Skin discoloration or thickening
  • Bulging veins progressing
  • Burning, itching, or restlessness
  • Wounds that won’t heal
  • Family history of venous disease

Early treatment prevents long-term complications and improves results.
