What are the symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Dr. Brian Keyashian

Common symptoms of varicose veins include aching, heaviness, fatigue, itching, and swelling in the legs—especially after long periods of standing or at the end of the day. Symptoms often improve with leg elevation or compression stockings, but more advanced cases may involve skin discoloration, painful inflammation, or non-healing wounds.

Varicose veins are large veins beneath the skin that can cause symptoms such as itching, heaviness, fatigue, and swelling in the legs. Swelling is particularly common at the end of the day or after standing for long periods of time.

Symptoms often improve when you elevate your legs or wear compression stockings.

In more advanced cases, varicose veins can lead to phlebitis, which occurs when a vein becomes inflamed and painful due to clotting. Some people may also experience bleeding from the veins, skin discoloration, or the development of wounds.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult a vein specialist.

Still Relying on Compression Stockings?

For many patients, compression therapy can help manage symptoms but it may not address the underlying vein condition. Our board-certified vascular surgeons offer comprehensive evaluations to determine whether minimally invasive treatment is appropriate for you.
