What do Varicose Veins feel like?

Answered by
Dr. Brian Keyeshian

Varicose veins often feel like aching, heaviness, fatigue, or tenderness in the legs. Some people experience itching, burning, or pain that worsens after long periods of standing or sitting. Visibly, varicose veins may appear bulging, twisted, and blue beneath the skin. Spider veins can also occur and appear red or purple but are usually smaller and closer to the skin’s surface.

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that develop beneath the skin. They can appear bulging or twisted and are often blue in color. These veins may feel tender to the touch.

Some people also have spider veins, which are located closer to the surface of the skin. Spider veins typically appear red or purple and may look like a spider web pattern.

Common symptoms of varicose veins and spider veins include aching, heaviness, fatigue, itching, and pain in the legs. Symptoms may worsen after long periods of standing or sitting.

Still Relying on Compression Stockings?

For many patients, compression therapy can help manage symptoms but it may not address the underlying vein condition. Our board-certified vascular surgeons offer comprehensive evaluations to determine whether minimally invasive treatment is appropriate for you.
