Why do Varicose Veins itch?
Answered by
Dr. Brian Keyashian
Varicose veins itch because increased pressure in the veins causes blood and fluid to leak into surrounding tissue. This leakage leads to inflammation in the skin, which triggers itching, swelling, and skin discoloration—most commonly around the lower legs and calves.

Varicose veins form when there is increased pressure in the venous system. This increased pressure causes blood to leak out of the veins into the surrounding soft tissue.
That leakage leads to inflammation, which is what causes the itching sensation. The same process is also responsible for swelling and skin discoloration, especially in the calf area.
